"Learn to install PBM’s VB, VB+, and VBB ventilation blocks with this complete, step-by-step guide for flawless results."

Materials & Tools Needed

  • Materials: Ventilation blocks, mortar mix, water, starter bars, brick mesh, and water repellent (optional).
  • Tools: Trowel, bucket, spatula, chalk line, mason’s line, spirit level, measuring tape, pencil, rubber hammer, jointing tool, brush, safety gear (gloves, safety shoes).

Make sure to wear safety gear (gloves, safety shoes) before starting.

  • Setting Out Drawings: Prepare your layout and setting-out drawings to guide block placement.
  • Check the Surface: Ensure the base is solid, stable, and level.
  • Mark the Outline: Snap a chalk line to outline the project perimeter.
  • Mark Guidelines: Draw guidelines for each layer of blocks and mortar along one side of the column or structure for precision during installation.
  • Prepare the Mortar: Mix the premix mortar powder with water in a bucket.
  • Achieve Consistency: Stir until you reach a thick, peanut butter-like consistency. This ensures good adhesion.
  • Apply Mortar Base: Spread a 1/2-inch layer of mortar onto the base or footing.
  • Place the First Block: Apply mortar to the sides of the block, then position it firmly in place.
  • Set with Rubber Hammer: Tap the block gently with a rubber hammer until you see mortar squeezing out, which indicates good contact.
  • Check Alignment: Use a spirit level to ensure the block is level both horizontally and vertically.
  • Repeat for Adjacent Blocks: Place the next block following the same process, ensuring tight alignment with its neighbor.
  • Use a Mason’s Line: Stretch a mason’s line between stakes at the ends of your marked area to guide block placement. This helps keep rows straight and even.
  • Check Each Block: Frequently check each block for level and alignment, making adjustments as needed.
  • Clean Excess Mortar: Remove any excess mortar with a trowel for a clean finish.
  • Continue Laying Layers: Repeat the process for each layer, placing blocks, checking alignment, and leveling.
  • Add Reinforcement: Insert starter bars and brick mesh every 400mm of height to strengthen the wall.
  • Let Mortar Cure: Once you reach a height of 600mm, allow the mortar to cure partially before moving to another area.
  • Fill Gaps with Mortar: Once all blocks are placed, fill any remaining gaps with mortar.
  • Form Joints: Use a jointing tool to shape smooth, concave mortar joints, improving appearance and durability.
  • Clean Up: Brush any excess mortar off the face of the blocks for a tidy finish.
  • Mix Water Repellent: Combine water repellent and water in a 1:4 ratio.
  • Apply Two Coats: For better protection, apply two coats of the water repellent over the surface of the blocks, allowing the first layer to dry before applying the second.
  • Benefits: This optional finish helps reduce fungus and algae growth, making long-term maintenance easier.
